Net worth and rebalancing

List what you own and what you owe. See your net worth, your mix of investments, and the moves that bring it back to your target.

Net worth

Your net worth is $210K

$390,000 you own, less $180,000 you owe. $90K of it is in investments you can rebalance.

Moves to rebalance

  1. Move $6,000 from equity to debt
  2. Move $1,000 from cash to debt
  3. Move $4,500 from cash to gold

Selling can trigger tax and exit loads. Where you can, rebalance with new money instead: add to what’s under target.

How this is calculated

Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. Your home counts toward it, but it’s not rebalanced: you can’t sell a tenth of a house.

net worth = assets − loans
drift = holding − target × investable

Moves go from the most overweight class to the most underweight, so the list is as short as it can be. Many people rebalance once a year, or when a class drifts more than 5 points from target.
